The Quality of School Education and Extreme Stress of Students
The Korean education system is continuously issued. Various media dealt with it, such as drama, news, or documentary. Korean people criticize the educational system every year, and the government changes the policy to make it better. However, there are always fundamental problems in it.
The school education system lacks a variety of learning. First, students have to follow the given curriculum of their school. Then they eventually get a limited education that is just right for going to university. Finally, they go to university according to their grades, not their aptitude, because they have a scarce chance to look for their careers. This situation can make an unexpected situation. The famous chemistry lecturer Park Sang Hyeon said that one of his students went to the university as a chemistry major without learning chemistry because he went there by his grades. After all, he learned chemistry only then.
The low quality of school education causes private education to increase. Also, turning into online classes because of COVID-19, the students are more dissatisfied with the school lesson. They think school lessons are ineffective. The rate of students dropping out of school increases every year and go to academies to prepare for KSAT. Only students who go to university by school grade have worth going to school. According to the data of UNICEF in 2013, the satisfaction of school life was low. 18.5% of the students answered that they are satisfied with their school life. It was the 26th highest among 30 countries.
The extreme stress of hard studies and busy schedules is also a problem. According to a Korean National Educational Conference survey in 2019, 69.2% of the high school students answered 'Yes' to the question "Are you stressed at studying for exams?". At the Ministry of Education and Science Technology(MEST) research, 10% of students committed suicide in 2004~ 2008 because of stress while studying. The rate of students who get stressed is increasing every year. The percentage of stress from studies of Korean students was higher than any student of other countries. In Daechi, the most competitive town for studying, high school students have difficulty getting 1st grade at the exam if they do not get the perfect score. Because of this, they have pressure and anxiety at every test.
The problems of school education and stress from studying affect many students negatively. Therefore, we should ponder the ultimate goal of education and realize the necessity of change to solve these problems in better ways.
